What this role looks like

As Virtuagym's new PHP Developer you join a team of 40+ software engineers within the 60+ strong Product Development department. You get to work on creating new features and improving existing functionalities, while ensuring scalability and maintainability.

You work agile within the Scrum framework in one of our web-based squads. Each squad is responsible for a domain of our product, be that Communication and Engagement, Memberships and E-commerce, Payments and Invoices, or Training and Nutrition. The squads usually consists of Backend, Frontend or Full-stack Developers, a QA Engineer and a Product Owner. What unites all of us is an eagerness to learn, an eye for quality, and playing for the same team - all of this while having fun, improving ourselves and our product.

Some of your key tasks:

  • Develop new features and improve existing functionalities, taking into account scalability, feasibility, transferability and quality
  • Collaborate with your squad and other colleagues to determine technical and functional requirements for new features
  • Contribute with your knowledge of coding, architecture and development processes to department-wide improvements
  • Become a a valued member of your autonomous, cross-functional team by participating and contributing in Scrum rituals


What you bring to the table

  • 3+ years experience with PHP (preferably OOP & PHP7+)

  • Knowledge of database design

  • SQL coding experience (MySQL and NoSQL - MongoDB, Redis, etc)

  • Familiar with web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, AJAX, JSON, Bootstrap, Vue.js)

  • Experience with Git

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Knowledge of agile methodologies, such as Scrum

  • Strong communication skills in English, our company language

  • A university degree in a related field, such as computer science

  • Ideally you are already located in the Netherlands or within the European Union

Even better if you have experience with:

  • Other programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript)

  • Microservices architecture

  • DevOps culture and automation tools like Kubernetes, CI/CD and Docker
